HOMELESSNESS

Look at the levels and descriptions of what homelessness may look like in our youth. Homelessness can be disaggregated into three levels:

  • primary homelessness – living on the streets, in parks, in deserted buildings;
  • secondary homelessness – living in temporary shelters such as refuges, emergency accommodation.
  • or sleeping on a friend's couch; and.
  • tertiary homelessness – living in a boarding room.

Project We Have Room's goal is to support transitional youth age ranging from 17-22  finding themselves in financial hardships, unemployed, and seeking reliable resources that will prepare them for the next phase of life.  We Have Room will provide daily activities that will give clients the opportunity to learn financial literacy, mentorship, explore their interest to allow youth to discover a skill or craft that will be lucrative for gainful employment.   Clients will learn job preparation with interview skills, given hands-on opportunities to learn technical skills, craft or service skills.  Clients will  visit businesses, speak to owners for potential employment.  Each client while in the individualized innovative  programming designed specifically to meet their needs will be on their own personal timeline specifically for them ranging from 12 months to 6 years with mentorship and follow-up upon exiting the programs.  Programming will also include mental wellness activities, counseling, education and entrepreneurship skills and opportunities.

Here are some ways individuals and community stakeholders can support our youth in Project We Have Room:

  • Upon exiting Foster Care purchase graduation gifts and items to help set up for their transition into an independent living space;
  • Become a mentor with G.O.O.D Girlz or The Amadi Boys Club with STEP Today YCDOC by visiting www.steptoday.org;
  • Donate and/or participate in the annual STEP for youTH-Transferring Hope Walk a thon fundraiser promoting Mental Wellness in May;
  • Provide employment opportunities, job placement, skills training and workshops;
  • Donate vehicles, bus tokens or means of transportation;
  • Provide temporary housing prior to placement;
  • Donate to the Scholarship funds specifically set up for each client which will be given upon exiting the program.
