AGED OUT FOSTER CARE

WE HAVE ROOM

Children who are aging out of foster care are young people who already have started life with challenges.  Foster child by definition means

  1. foster child n. a child without parental support and protection, placed with a person or family to be cared for, usually by local welfare services or by court order.

FACTS

  1. By the time children turn 18 and have not been adopted by a family they risk the fears and realization that they will have to live on the street or do what's necessary to survive.  Although children are resilient they are not responsible enough to cope with life emotionally, physically and mentally or financially.  Most of the time these children are dealing with mental health issues due to their traumatic experiences and dealing with the fact that they do not have families to love or who loves them.  In many cases, older Youth have been involved in delinquent behaviors or in the system, turned to drugs to cope or become parents before the age of 18.  Aging out of foster care means you will truly be on your own without supervision or protection and viewed as an adult.  Extended care is not a guarantee but is made available if that is the desire for the individual but again not a guarantee.
  2. Project We Have Room is the solution driven agent that will change the mindset of the youth offering hope, a plan of direction and life skills that will support the youth in becoming active members and contributors in society.  We Have Room Independent Living prepares youth to become lifelong learners not only offering a safe living situation starting at age 17-22 but also offering services that will allow young adults to prepare for the world of work through training and education.  Clients may use resources that will help them navigate through life, pursue college, entrepreneurial endeavors, and learn life skills.
  3. As a community stakeholder, I have invested in building meaningful relationships with young adults who grew up in foster care in addition to having personal friends who are successfully raising amazing children who were in foster care.
